Théâtre l’Aire Libre
Upon taking over as artistic director of the Théâtre l’Aire Libre near Rennes, Le joli collectif wanted to give the theater a new visual identity and chose to entrust this project to Eugénie Bidaut. To achieve this, she designed a playful, monospace typeface, embellished with post-binary characters for French in which the feminine word endings jostle and push the masculine ones to fit into the character’s bounding box. She also created a set of calligraphic lettering that dances with square ornaments reminiscent of the tiles on the building’s facade. The aim here is to play on the coexistence and contrast between a rigid geometric structure and lively, joyful organic forms; the calligraphic letters are drawn on the same grid on which the squares are aligned. In 2026, to address increasing readability requirements, Eugénie Bidaut added a Text version to the typeface family, complementing the Mono version for small-size text.
